DANNY Ayres has been handed the No.1 race jacket for his Cradley debut against King’s Lynn at Birmingham on Wednesday (7.30).

Ayres has got the nod from boss Will Pottinger after impressing on his return to the track after shoulder surgery.

And he insists he can’t wait to race in the famous green, red and white as the Heathens look to make a flying start to their National League programme.

“It’s finally here and I can’t wait,” said Ayres. “As soon as it became apparent Kent couldn’t guarantee me a place this was the only club I wanted to be at in the National League.

“It’s going to be great riding in front of the loud, enthusiastic Cradley fans. They’ve made me so welcome it’s unbelievable.”

Ayres had the operation on his shoulder almost four months ago – and he got his first competitive laps under his belt in Simon Lambert’s Testimonial at King’s Lynn on Sunday.

"First and foremost it was an honour to be asked by Simon to ride in his meeting,” he said. “He's been a true friend since I started riding myself so to do this for him was no trouble.

"I made a blinding start in my first one and felt really good on the bike but Sam (Masters) got by and I seemed to struggle a bit.

"Winning my third ride was another great battle with some top quality riders and it shows my shoulder is fine and I'm ready to push on this season.”

Heathens welcome back former favourites Tom Perry and Dan Greenwood and hand a debut to Ayres, Conor Dwyer and Ryan Burton.

CRADLEY: Danny Ayres, Conor Dwyer, Dan Greenwood, Luke Harris, Tom Perry, Ryan Burton, Joe Lawlor.

KING’S LYNN: Luke Priest, Lewis Whitmore, Ryan Kinsley, Scott Campos, Danny Phillips, Connor Locke, Taylor Hampshire.
